Costs
Standardized Costs
Costs depend on a number of factors. To illustrate, we can give the example of a 20-minute survey block (around 100 items for each respondent) on a sample of 1,000 respondents from the 1KA Panel (response rate of 18 %), where the internal cost for projects within the Faculty of Social Sciences is around 0.40€ per minute of interviewing, which amounts to 8,000€ for the whole survey. In the case of a longer survey, the cost per minute may decrease slightly, and in the case of a shorter survey, it may increase. This cost does not include the additional costs for mixed survey modes or other extentions (e.g. inclusion of 14-17 year olds, measures to increase cooperation, additional intervention etc.), but only the cost for a standard online survey.
For external clients outside the faculty, the cost is slightly higher: 0.50€ per minute of the respondent's time on the panel (9.000€). This rate compares very favourably with prices in other countries, as the cost is almost never below 1.00€ per minute (see e.g. OPPA).
Prices do not include VAT and are subject to unannounced changes (e.g. due to changes in postal prices).
The above costs include standardised service:
- a methodological review of the questionnaire and its contents (in terms of compliance with the terms of the 1KA Panel),
- technical integration of the questionnaire, which is assumed to be developed in 1KA by the client), into the 1KA Panel,
- logistics of invitations (initial letter and up to three email reminders),
- telephone and e-mail support to panellists during the survey,
- a standard online survey (no mixed methods, e.g. postal surveys for non-internet users),
- incentives for panellists (default incentive is 5€ in advance),
- basic data controls,
- default population weighting (if the general population is being surveyed),
- database preparation,
- preparation of a standardised implementation report,
- production of a summary sheet (univariate analysis).
In the case of a survey on a completely new probability sample outside the 1KA Panel (response rate of around 35 %), in the specific example mentioned above (20 minutes and 1,000 respondents), the internal costs for the Faculty of Social Sciences are 0.70€ per minute of respondents' time (14,000€ in total) and 0.80€ per minute (16.000€ in total) for external clients.
Additional Services
The above standardized costs, based on one minute of the respondent's time, do not include additional services that may be subject to specific agreements with the 1KA Panel, as they vary widely between surveys:
- questionnaire development,
- testing the questionnaire,
- setting up the questionnaire in 1KA,
- additional data intervention (e.g. coding of responses),
- additional methodological analyses (e.g. non-response analysis),
- substantive interpretations and analyses,
- interventions to further increase participation rates, such as combined survey modes, increased incentives, additional reminders, knock-to-nudge or telephone or field-based encouragement to respond,
- expansion to 15-17 year olds or inclusion of non-internet users,
- general methodological and statistical advice.
The cost of additional services is based on additional material costs and estimated (or actual) work hours, where the Centre for Social Informatics' standardized survey pricing is used - see 1KA price list.
